Silver Jubilee Celebration of Indira Gandhi National Open University

On the auspicious occasion of 92nd Birth Anniversary of Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi the Former Prime Minister of India and the daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the prestigious Center of Education, the Indira Gandhi National Open University celebrated her Silver Jubilee in the gracious presence of Her Excellency Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the Hon’ble President of India, Mr. Kapil Sibal the Minister of Human Resources Development, Government of India, Mrs. D. Purandeswari the Minister of State for Human Resources Development and Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Member Planning Commission of India.

 

 

 

Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU in his address said that a modest beginning of ours in 1985 has led to a remarkable journey to become the National Resource Center for Open and Distance learning with International recognition and presence. Now the university has the capability of effectively providing learner center quality education for skill up gradation.

 

 

He further added that the strength of the students at IGNOU was 4,000 in its founding year in 1985 and has gone up to 2.5 million now in the silver jubilee year.

 

It has now 61 Regional Centers, 2,243 study centers, 323 Academic programmes presence in 34 countries, 53 world wide partner institution, largest number of foreign students in any Indian University, ties up with universities in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia and America.

 

 

Prof. Rajasekharan Pillai the Vice Chancellor of IGNOU also invited Dr. Karim Najafi, the Cultural Counsellor of the Islamic Republic of Iran, New Delhi for his academic contribution and initiative for having an MoU between Payam-e-Noor University, Iran and IGNOU and another MoU with Iran Culture House, New Delhi.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

President Pratibha Patil in her presidential address said that the IGNOU could play a significant role in reducing the disparities in education by extending education opportunities to villages and remote areas of the country. The President launched new initiatives by IGNOU such as flexible learning platform new Gyan Vani Radio Station and the Gyan programme. She also announced institution of the Rajiv Gandhi International Prize for Education and Technology Development. She further said that it would enable army personal to acquire former qualifications and degrees.

 

 

Mr. Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Human Resource Development said that “there is a need to invest in technology to enhance access to complex educational resources which is necessary for distance learning. The internet and mobile can be used for dissemination of information. There is an urgent need for establishing connectivity through broad band and open source software.

 

 

Mrs. D. Purandeswari, the HRD Minister of State said that the courses and programmes of such universities should cater to all who wish to acquire and upgrade their knowledge. To promote learning and encourage excellence in new knowledge fields we must have an innovative Open University system which should be flexible in terms of combination of courses, enrolment eligibility and conducting of examination.

 

 

Mr. U.S. Tolia the Registrar of IGNOU conveyed vote of thanks.

 

 

 

Dr. Pankaj Khere met Dr. Karim Najafi and conveyed his thanks for the seminar of Open Universities at Tehran and appreciated the hospitalities of the organizers. He also conveyed his thanks to Dr. Karim Najafi for today’s participation.

 

 

 

Dr. Sanjiv Pandey the Regional Director of IGNOU also congratulated Dr. Karim Najafi for the implementation of the agreement between Iran Culture House & IGNOU and gave further assurance for more strengthening of the academic relation between the two centers.
